Spring has sprung! And not a moment too soon. Mother Nature brought
the cruelest of April Fool's presents in the form of another foot of
snow to burden the roofs of camp this past weekend. Now we are
preparing for the BIG MELT :-D
In the meantime, it seems like I have been trying out for a bit part
in the New England version of Road Warrior while racking up the
mileage the last two weeks! The ACA Spring Conference in Manchester
was a rousing success and our camping family was well represented
throughout the weekend. It was great to spend time reminiscing with
Dave Buck at one of the working breakfasts. Also had a chance to meet
some wonderful staff prospects at both UNH and Plymouth State (special
thanks to Sean Therrien for helping out with the booth).
Plenty of other pre-season staff training events will be available.
Andy Sherman got a head start by heading out to Pinkham Notch to
take a SOLO Wilderness First Responder course hosted by the
AMC. Those who want to participate in our mid June LGT course might
consider spending a moment or two getting some laps in at your local
pool...hint, hint. While I continue to try and squeeze CIT interviews
into the schedule (Dave Kupsc and Tom Buebendorf - your up next!), the
first wave of staff contract packets are wending their way across the
globe as we speak. If you haven't received yours yet, don't worry.
Despite the continued onslaught of snow, the facilities team has not
missed a beat churning out new screens for the Senior Section
amidst a host of other camp improvement projects. This week the real
work begins as we welcome back none other than Herb Brasseur!
The alumni committees of North Woods and Pleasant Valley have decided
to hold a joint meeting during the first week of May to move ahead
with the planning of this year's calendar of events. Some details on a
few of them are already posted up on the web at
Reminder that our next social gathering will be our second annual camp
pre-season Kick-off in Foxboro, MA for the Revolution season opener on
Saturday, April 14th. Spend a portion of your Easter weekend with the
camping family - everyone is invited and tickets are only $10 (contact
me directly for details). Don't miss out on the chance to see the
fireworks... and no, those will not be coming from our tailgate
barbeque ;-P
A mini Camping reunion was held when Kristin Aikin dropped in
briefly from her adventures in Colorado to take a quick tour of her
old stomping grounds at Ponkapoag and have lunch with Terry Orr and
Jill Gary. The steady stream of alumni getting reconnected with camp
via the web continues - with the latest being Cary Hastings and
Mary Drysdale (the latter may be astounded at the upgrades to
the horseback program since she ran it over a decade ago).
This week's featured lost alums are John Goodwin and Jamie
Levenson.
