Hi.
I attended North Woods Camp from 1970-1973,
along with my brother Abram, and we truly enjoyed our time there. Of
course the first year or so, during the first weeks I hated it and wanted
to go home. I was 10 and had never really spent time outside of Roxbury
and Dorchester, where I grew up. It was a bit of a culture shock for me,
but I met a lot of great kids, whom I am sure are great men. By that last
week I didn't want the summer to end.
I am an artist/illustrator living in
Sedona, Arizona. After working in advertising and being a freelance
illustrator and graphic designer, we moved to Arizona from Boston 8 years
ago. For the last year I have owned a printing and graphics business, De
Luz Printing & Design. I have been married for eighteen years and have
four children, ranging in ages from 11 to 2.
I went back to Boston this May for my 25th
high school reunion at Boston Latin. Got to drive through the Ted Williams
Tunnel, something that wasn't possible before I moved away. Camp does pop
into my mind every so often: Bug Juice, playing Baseball and Basketball
against the evil Camp Belknap, the bats flying through the Great Hall
during Movie night, etc.
I have also had brushes with my North Woods
pastin the form of Terry Jones, who was there the same time as me. We,
along with another NWC alum, Josh Hauser, used to play tag football in
Newton on weekends not too many years ago. We played High School football
at the same time, he at the powerhouse Walpole and me at Latin. Thank God
we never had to play them!
Through Josh, I also met up with Jim
Friedman, who was at camp the same time as me. He and Josh were at the
same law firm for a bit. I had my art studio downtown and used to run into
all three of them from time to time. Josh is in Canada, last I knew. It
would be nice to hear from any of them.
Sadly, my brother Abram passed away in
1983, at 22. He had a great time at North Woods and was quite popular
while there.
It was great fun, learning how to make
things at Shirley's woodshop classes, learning to sail, shoot rifles,
hike, and use a bow & arrow. Not to mention dancing with a girl for
the first time, at one of the dances!
Thanks for letting me catch up. You can see
