Holiday News

Happy New Year to the entire North Woods community!

Loretta and I are back from a lovely honeymoon in San Francisco and are looking forward to developing the pictures of all the classic tourist hotspots to share with all who venture up this winter to visit camp. The snow has yet to fall, but the ice fishermen have already dragged bob houses out between the central boat dock and Cow Island.

The week has been a very busy one indeed! Hopefully, the vast majority of you have received your Northwoodsman. If for any reason you or someone you know has not yet had one appear in the mailbox, please drop us a note! We are still in the process of updating the alumni mailing list and unfortunately many old addresses still appear on it.

There is much news to report, so I will just touch on the highlights:

bulletAfter a very successful season for the program, Early Bird registrations are ahead of last year's numbers on Dec. 31st. If you know of anyone who might be interested in sending their children to camp, get the word out to them fast!
bulletWe welcome aboard Tom Marden as a full-time staff member of the Camping Services team. Tom is certainly no stranger to camp. He has been at Sandy Island for years and spent many long hours during the pre-season working on cabins at North Woods.
bulletThe Association is proud to announce the election of three new members to the Camping Board of Managers in December. We give a hearty welcome to Charles Sorenson, Andy Doyle and Emily Lichtenstein and thank them for their commitment to ensure the future of camping.
bulletKudos to Roger Jones and Linda Todaro for their Herculean effort on reaching the end of year target for Capital Campaign pledges towards Phase I of the Todaro Leadership Center. Thanks to all who have supported this effort!
bulletOur first alumni event of the year promises to be a must on the social calendar and a great opportunity for campers throughout the years to gather and share stories, laughter and good cheer. Please mark your calendars and drop by for an event to remember.
bulletThe Program Committee has spun off another working group focused on issues dealing with the Teen Programs ( LIT, CIT and Adventure Tripping ). Contact us if you have an interest in this area and would like to participate.
bulletThe Reach Out Campaign 2000 is just around the corner and we are still in need of campaigners!!! Last year the young alums of the '80's and 90's put both the Old Timer's and 60's and 70's teams to shame with their enthusiasm and swept the campaigning awards. It is time for my generation and those of my forbears to show that we can match such spirit!

Finally, some camp book notes:

Thanks to Rich Adams for passing along Shouting at the Sky by Gary Ferguson at Reunion. I promise I will read it as soon as I can find a few moments of spare time!

Andy Sherman's suggested reading for the holidays is Bless the Beasts & Children and he sends his regards to all and hopes to see many of you at the Rillahans on Saturday, January 8th.
