Dear Editor
In September of '96, my wife Jane and I paid one of
those "deja vu" visits to North Woods - the occasion of our 47th
wedding anniversary.
We hadn't seen North Woods since the summer of '52 -
our second summer as head counselors of the Junior Section. Camp was
completely deserted, so we drove around to the Junior Section to
have our memories jogged. Indeed, we received quite an enjoyable
"jogging," to see the overhanging chimney in the main building
still hanging with my NW lettering and the sketches of Indian symbols
still intact! In fact, 44 years later, everything about the camp
looked wonderfully well preserved and familiar.
Jane and I have some of our fondest memories of life
at North Woods. The overnights to Pine Island, the pillow fight
(feathers flying) in the lean-to or Mt. Chocorua overnight, those Sunday
night suppers (cocoa, cereal and p-nut butter sandwiches) and the
occasional infamous tomato aspic ordeal, which "Mac" MacGregor
insisted was good for all of us. And who could forget his cure for
those unfortunatesD with "colds"? "Strip down to
underwear, drink lots of water, and sit in sunshine up the hill at Mr. and
Mrs. Mac's residence."
Our fellow counselors were an exemplary crew; for us
in the Junior Section, we particularly appreciated Don Buebendorf,
a wizard at fly-tying and a very responsible care-giver.
The camp experience got in our blood; for the next
13 summers we ran a day camp in So. Dartmouth, MA, not far from Friends
Academy, where we taught for 5 years, followed by 28 years in New Canaan,
CT, and including a 2-year principal's job at an American School in
Calcutta, India.
Now Jane and I are retired but busy with volunteer
work and more camping - with trailer - through those marvelous deserts of
the So. West and California.
Best wishes to our old pals and fellow alums from
the summers of '51 and '52 at dear old North Woods!
Sincerely,
Al and Jane Knaus
