A
quick look back at last year's Old Timer's
Weekend and this is what I had to say prior to that weekend:
Yes,
North Woods is bugging you again!
As
I bought my last batch of stamps at the Mirror Lake Post Office I
couldn’t help but note the following message on the packet:
Insects
and spiders… Insects
have been around for about 350 million years. Today their numbers reign
supreme. More than a million species are known, but scientists estimate
that millions of species may remain undiscovered. At this very moment,
there are some 200 million live insects for every human on Earth.
Insects
as a group have achieved something that has eluded humans - sustainable
development. Insects are the primary consumers of plants, yet they do not
merely exploit plants. They also pollinate them, thereby ensuring the
plant’s reproduction. Humans have yet to strike a balance between use
and conservation of nature.
As
I peered at page after page of colorful looking creatures in my hand, my
mind wandered to an earlier, simpler time. As a Junior in Lakeside,
nothing was more fascinating than the discovery of another bug during the
camp day in some nook or cranny.
These
days I find myself still in wonderment at the beauty and power of nature
on every walk through camp. Just one example was the sight of the damage
that Hurricane Floyd wrought upon one of my favorite places when I was a
Junior - Mac’s Lean-to. Clearly, we
are still trying to find a way to become better bugs and balance our use
and conservation of the natural surroundings found by the beautiful shores
of Lake Winnipesaukee.
When
I promised John Keeler last year that I would take over the
daunting task of running the Oldtimers
weekend which he so ably and
thanklessly undertook year after year, it did not take but a moment to
choose which project was the most worthwhile to focus on.
So,
the tradition continues….
The
2000 Oldtimers
Weekend will target repairing Mac’s Lean to
We
hope you are able to join us for all or part of the weekend! And now, it
is time for John Keeler to truly return the weekend to its roots for 2001.
Information coming soon!!!
