Busy Beavers and Short Haul Truckers at North Woods

My, how time flies as the season approaches and yet another volunteer work weekend has come and gone! We hope to see many more faces new and old during the traditional Memorial Day Work Weekend.

Many thanks to all who came up to camp this past weekend to make it a very busy one indeed - Dave and Herb Brasseur, Mike McCarthy, Glenn Hodgdon, Dave Fuente, Jeremy Adams, Kate Bowie, Keith McCarthy, Carole Gary, Geoff Ball, Chris Meyers, Fran Rogers, Jill Gary, Josh Otlin, Jennifer Christian, Jason Rogers, Andy Sherman, Todd Fournier and Greta.

We accomplished a great deal including:

bulletThe ski boats were put in the water and inspected despite the low level of the lake.
bulletThe first stages of cleaning out and organizing the office portion of the Barstow office and infirmary building has been completed.
bulletLarge sections of blow down and stumps along the road on the way down to the office have been removed.
bulletThe canoes and rowboats were carried out of Fireside.
bulletThe path to the Chef's Cabin has been cleared.
bulletAll of the brush in the old Wilderness and Forestry area was dragged and chipped to create a massive pile near the Sandy Dock for use elsewhere in camp.
bulletThe first stage of cleaning the Roehrig Center was completed.
bulletThe floors in two of the cabins in the old Senior Section and one in the new Middler Village were painted.
bulletThe new garden behind Arts & Crafts was tilled.
bulletMore construction debris was picked up around the Junior House.
bulletThe Arts & Crafts building was cleaned and supplies stored away.
bulletThe lower ball field was seeded by the green thumb brigade just before the rains came.

Finally, two truckloads of furniture donations were picked up from Simmons College as a benefit of the school's continuing efforts to renovate dorms. We now have a wonderful collection of dressers, desks, beds, mattresses and chairs which gives us the flexibility to:

bulletCreate a large functional surface area for campers to use inside Arts & Crafts and move the picnic tables outside.
bulletRevamp the Drama room and organize the costume closet.
bulletSolve some of the staff clothing storage dilemmas in the cabins.
bulletIncrease the workspace in the conference room in the office.
bulletProvide more counselor beds throughout camp.
bulletUpgrade the seating options in the Roehrig Center and MacGregor Hall with chairs more in keeping with the wooden charm of the structure.
bulletMeet some of the expanded program storage needs in the Lodges.
bulletBuild extended storage/work surfaces in the new Maintenance Emporium.

We are truly indebted to Linda and Roy at Simmons College. Fran Rogers deserves special mention for not only his tireless efforts to keep an eye out for equipment useful to the camp, but also for showing the current generation of staff what it really means to work... he left a foursome of much younger men in his dust when it came to hauling this furniture from dawn until dusk!

So if you would like to participate in the fun, whether it is to paint, haul brush, stain, sweep, move sailboats, set up program areas, etc. please join us for all or part of this weekend. The festivities start on Friday night and end on Monday.

Come one, come all!!

See you this weekend,

David Goodwin
