Nathan N. Todaro

I was appointed director of North Woods Camp
in January of 1960. Some time in February of that year I visited camp with
Merrill Norlin, who was then director. We donned snowshoes at the
Farmhouse and walked down into the camp. It was simply beautiful. I’ll
always remember that first walk. It was quiet, with no wind, and the pines
were immense. The snow was so deep that we were able to walk right into
the Great Hall, which had no screens or doors at that time. I was
impressed with the sheer beauty of the snow, the trees, the cabins and the
frozen lake.

That summer, my first as director and in a new
camp, was exciting and challenging to say the least. As a matter of fact,
each summer since then has brought its own challenges and rewards. I owe a
lot of thanks to the people who made that first summer and subsequent
ones, a lot easier than they might have been. They were Bob Singer,
Shirley Goodwin, Traylor Rodgers, Glenn Hodgdon, Toney Mirenda, and Sam
Todaro. I especially appreciate the support of Ed Johnson a the Boston
YMCA.

North Woods has become a meaningful and important part of the Todaro
family life. Carole and I have raised our five children here: Linda, Andy,
Tina, Diana and David. It was at North Woods that our nephew, Steven
Todaro, was born; our son, David christened; and our daughter, Linda,
married to Steve Mabee. The camp has provided so many unforgettable
experiences and lasting friendships. I can recall scores of people who
have worked with us over the years. I have watched campers grow into
responsible adults who have made valuable contributions to the camp.
