Log of the Senior Mt.
Washington Trip |
|
August 9, 1954
This morning, a group of seniors,
myself included, was driven by truck to the Pinkham Notch Camp at the base
of Mt. Washington. Upon arriving there, we ate lunch.
After lunch, we shouldered our packs and hiked up Tuckerman Ravine Trail
to the Hermit Lake Shelter, where we were to spend the night. We had no
trouble this time lighting fires, for the wood was dry. We ate a good
supper, and a while later, went to bed.

August 10
Today, we continued along the same
trail (Tuckerman Ravine) to the top of Mt. Washington. After breakfast, we
started up the headwall, which was rather slippery due to a heavy drizzle.
We reached the top safely, and from that point, the trail was mostly over
huge boulders to the summit.
By the time we reached the summit, we were pretty wet and cold. Our group
stayed at the Tip Top Hotel for about two hours. Lunch, which we brought
with us, was eaten in the house. Tea and coffee were also supplied. Before
lunch, we wandered about the house; then we went over to the weather
station.
|
At about 1:30, we started down the same trail, as we thought the Lion Head
trail might be too dangerous. After about 1½ hours of hiking we reached
the shelter, where we picked up our packs and descended to Pinkham Notch.
The original plan was to eat supper there, but the wet grounds, fog, and
rain made it too difficult; in view of this, we returned to camp, just in
time to eat supper with the waiters.
