Treasure
Hunt Provides Thrills for All
|

|
At precisely 9:30, yesterday morning,
August 25, one of the permanent events at North Woods got underway for
what seemed the umpteenth time. I refer, of course, to the annual
camp-wide treasure hunt. As always before, Shirley Goodwin, who for one
day becomes the sly old fox, was on hand to start the various teams on
their way.
There were ten teams, embodying the entire camp; they were led by such
notables as Bud Phillips, who knew where the treasure was buried, but was
tired of winning; Kent Campbell, John Keeler, John Craig, Ed Bromberg,
Scott MacKinlay, Paul Magnuson, Jack “The Cat” Ryan, and last, but
certainly not least, Jim Heffernan, who, as it turned out, almost won
himself…
All morning the various
teams followed up clues, which took them far and wide, from the North
Woods waterfront to Mirror Lake…. back to the Chapel, and so forth.
Through it all, the mighty Goodwin stood invincible, gloating in his one
day of glory.
From the very beginning;
there were two teams which were out in front of the others… and at first
it seemed like a two team treasure hunt. Those teams were captained by
John Keeler and Jim Heffernan. They remained far ahead during the whole
hunt. The teams came into lunch with Keeler and Heff far ahead but Heff
was running a close second. They were off again with a streak after the
meal without hesitation.
As it did turn out, the winner was John A. Keeler, “740”, captain of
Team 1, comprised of Chuck Bardelis, Mark Robinson, Tuck Aiken, Chuck
Adams, Peter Breen, Morris Knapp, and Dave Vaillancourt. The treasure was
split and enjoyed by all, and thus did Shirley Goodwin melt back into
obscurity.
All that is left to talk of in coming years and coming treasure hunts, and
to watch Goodwin closely, for who knows, you might stumble upon something.
