February 4th, 2000
I was awarded the United States Coast Guard unit
commendation with operational distinguishing service for my participation
in the unified command established for the search and rescue and recovery
of aircraft N 9253.
This was the plane that went down on July 17, 1999
between Fairfeld, New Jersey and Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. This was a very intense
operation because of who it was. The pilot was John F Kennedy JR along with
his wife Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and her sister Lauren Bessette. As you know,
not only is my job a mechanics helper but when needed I am used as a dock
worker because of background, having been in the Navy for 20 years.
When called upon I am always there.
Indeed this was a great honor for me to have
northeast regional commander Admiral Padgett, Commander submarine group
two from Groton CT, present this award to me. It makes me feel great
to be part of a team that can help out in a tragic event like this.
As we sailors say, without team work you have no organization. Each
one of us is responsible for the rest .
Respectfully
Dick Turner
