“I was Resident Director for 3
seasons, 1952-1954. I would have completed many more seasons, but my work
at school prevented me from putting the time into North Woods that it
required. I completed 50 years of camping and have now semi-retired,
spending my summers in Newbury, Massachussetts.
|
While I was at North Woods a new dock system
was put in, the archery and rifle range relocated, dining hall reshingled,
Paul Bunyan Day, Carnival at the Farmhouse, dances with Kehonka, little
Pine Island, first water-skiing, Charley Horner’s Wilderness Patrol,
Shirley Goodwin’s guidance, Judge Hardie maintenance, followed by Glenn
Hodgdon, and above all stealing Traylor Rodgers from Sandy Island
(kindness of Norm Green).”

The following excerpt is taken from “Skip”
Storer’s 1953 Director’s report:
“This
year, our 25th, marked an important milestone in North Woods’
history and development. Beginning in 1929 with 110 acres, 50 boys and 15
staff, we have progressed steadily to a doubled enrollment and staff, many
added buildings and a substantial increase in acreage. We still have the
same objectives and purposes so well defined 25 years ago… Time has not
changed these fundamental objectives… North Woods continues to be a camp
for campers – one in which growing boys may know the adventure of growth
and development in association with good companions and under the guidance
of understanding staff members.”
